Abu Dhabi, an emirate that makes up part of the United Arab Emirates, issued its own stamps between 1964 and 1972. Before that, Abu Dhabi stamps were actually British Postal Authority issues, surcharged in rupees and naya paisa, the Indian units of currency at the time.
In 1964 and 1965, Abu Dhabi stamps continued the use of rupees and naya paisa, but in 1966 Abu Dhabi began using the units dinar and fils. There are several of the old-currency stamps overprinted in the new units; these interesting bits of Abu Dhabi postal history appeal to collectors of overprints and other interesting Middle East stamps.
Das Island stamps and covers are also of interest to collectors; the island was part of Bahrain but soon became part of Abu Dhabi.
