The Palestinian National Authority has been issuing its own stamps for the Gaza Strip and the West Bank (together, not separately) since 1994. These issues have been surrounded with controversy, and in fact were not recognized at first except for some states.
Today, though still somewhat controversial, the stamps of the Palestinian Authority are recognized and have quite a few followers in the stamp-collecting world. The stamps have honored quite a wide range of international figures and events — Pope John Paul II, Bill Clinton, the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Mother Theresa, and Yassir Arafat, to name a few — as well as more home-grown concerns as the opening of airports and flora of the area.
