The West Bank, like Gaza Strip, has had its stamp history tied into entities larger than itself, and getting collectible West Bank philately today generally consists of covers and postmarks related to West Bank, rather than actual dedicated West Bank stamps.
For much of the early part of the twentieth century, the West Bank area was part of either the Ottoman Empire or a British territory under a League of Nations mandate. (This was as part of the larger area called Palestine.)
In 1948, Egypt and Jordan took control of West Bank postal business, overprinting their own stamps with PALESTINE, and in 1967 Israel took over. It wasn’t until 1994 that the Palestinian National Authority, made up of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, started to issue stamps of its own inscribed for the smaller region.
