In 1877, the city of Tegucigalpa in Honduras used some of the country’s 1865 postage stamps with an overprinted surcharge on them. This was similar to the city of Comayagua, which did the same thing but in red ink. The overprints used by Tegucigalpa give the surcharge written out in text rather than numerals.
These rare stamps from Tegucigalpa are often seen for sale in the marketplace and can be found to fit most budgets. Our current selection of Tegucigalpa overprint postage stamps can be browsed here. This section also may include covers and other postal collectibles related to Tegucigalpa.
