British Guiana (today Guyana) added surcharges to some of its stamps in 1889 along with the phrase ‘INLAND REVENUE’. There were fifteen different values, from 1 cent to 5 dollars. The $1 and $4 are particularly valuable these days. All of these stamp overprints were in black ink.
Also in 1889, some of these surcharged inland revenue stamps were surcharged again, with the original surcharge blocked out and the new value in large letters above. These overprints are in red.
From 1889 to 1903, a different series was issued for the same reason, but with inscriptions reading ‘POSTAGE & REVENUE’, so overprints were not necessary. These were printed in a range of values from 1c to 96c.
