Deutschösterreich is the German name of a short-lived entity that existed from 1918 until 1919. Also known in English as German Austria, Deutschösterreich came right after the end of the Austrian Empire and stamps are available from this brief moment in European history. Deutschösterreich stamps are highly collectible to lovers of both German and Austria stamps, as well as collectors who target no-longer-extant stamp issuers of the past.
The first Deutschösterreich stamps were leftovers from the just-fallen empire, with new overprints reading DEUTSCHÖSTERREICH. Soon afterwards, new stamps with the printed inscription of the country’s German name were issued. Both types are good to have in a collection of German Austria stamps.

The name used on the area’s stamps was shortened, to ÖSTERREICH, in 1922. But the stamps of this era can be considered Austrian and not those of Deutschösterreich.
