Jamaica has issued its own stamps since 1860, when the image of Queen Victoria was used for the then-British colony. Jamaica stamps are still issued and popular with many collectors, including collectors of British colonial and Commonwealth stamps.
The very first few issues of Jamaican stamps were inscribed JAMAICA POSTAGE; later stamps just read JAMAICA. British monarchs were common subjects on Jamaican stamps for several decades, in addition to various scenes from Jamaica.
In 1962, Jamaica gained its independence, and began issuing its own stamps with an array of interesting designs and subjects. Until the 1990s, Jamaican stamps relied heavily on Jamaican subjects — scenes of beaches and jungles, Bob Marley, Jamaican dancers, et cetera. Beginning in the 1990s, the subject matter of Jamaican stamps spread out to include international and perhaps unexpected commemorative subjects: dogs, Princess Diana, Olympic games, et cetera.
