The island of Dominica (not to be confused with the much larger Dominican Republic to the north) has issued its own stamps since 1874. Today, philatelic collectibles from Dominica include maximum cards, souvenir sheets, MNH unhinged stamps, and many other items; Dominica items are very popular with collectors.
Dominica’s first stamps of 1874 feature Queen Victoria, and came at a time when Dominica was part of the Leeward Islands. As a British colony, most of the stamps of Dominica showed likenesses of monarchs for many decades. In 1939, Dominica was transferred to the Windward Islands, which lay to the south of the Leeward Islands.
Around the 1960s and beyond, Dominica adopted an aggressive postage stamp issuing program, featuring a large range of subjects to appeal to many different collectors. Many stamps’s subjects are related to Dominica; many more are not (for example, stamps featuring Mickey Mouse, or the work of Pablo Picasso). Collecting the stamps of Dominica can be great fun.
