Barbuda, the north island of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, has had a short and fairly simple stamp history.
In 1922, stamps of the Leeward Islands with ‘BARBUDA’ overprints were used; this would prove to be an anomaly, however, for Antigua stamps were then used on Barbuda for several decades. Finally, in 1968, the island of Barbuda began issuing its own stamps.
In 1981, both Barbuda and Antigua gained independence from Britain, and joined to form the country of Antigua and Barbuda, which began issuing stamps with that name on them. Barbuda used these stamps, but also kept issuing its own BARBUDA-only stamps, all the way until the year 2000. After 2000, “Antigua and Barbuda” stamps were used exclusively, on both islands.
