The earliest Brunei postage stamps were the so-called “star and crescent” stamps of 1895. For a long time, the legitimacy of these stamps was questioned, but they have been embraced by the philatelist community of late. There are many different varieties. Sets are particularly attractive to many collectors.
In 1888, Brunei had become a British protectorate. Official national stamps for all postage needs were issued in 1907; these 1895 star and crescent stamps were intended for mail between Brunei and the nearby states of Sarawak and Labuan (the latter of which issued its own stamps that were overprinted for use in Brunei in 1906). Those states are part of Malaysia today.
