The classic shape of a scrimshaw tooth is, for many people, the first image that pops to mind when they see the word “scrimshaw”. Most of the time, a carver making a scrimshaw tooth doesn’t alter the shape by sculpting, outside of smoothing the surface a bit. Instead, the tooth is left in its appealing natural state.
Scrimshaw tooth art doesn’t necessarily have to be on a whale tooth with those classic contours though — many consider tusks to be rightly included under the heading ‘Scrimshaw Tooth Art’ and these have their own shapes (and generally greater dimensions).
Either way, a scrimshaw tooth or a few can be excellent decorative pieces; a few huddled together on a shelf or other surface are eye-catching from afar and intriguing at close range due to their carvings. You are only limited by your creativity.
