The current one-cent penny of the United States of America features President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, as pennies have since 1909, with a new reverse design: a shield and scroll representing the original thirteen colonies’ unity into a single country. These new Lincoln coins, often called shield cents or Lincoln shield cents, were introduced in 2010 and there are several proofs and special examples that collectors compete for. Shield cents replace the special 2009-only design of the Lincoln bicentennial pennies and the decades-old Lincoln memorial pennies.
