The much-maligned but well-known Susan B. Anthony dollar coin was issued between 1979 and 1981 (the final year in collectors’ sets only), and as a one-off in 1999. “Susie B”s replaced the Eisenhower dollars, swapping women’s rights crusader Anthony for the likeness of the former president but keeping the theme of the reverse (an eagle landing on the moon with earth visible in the background, in honor of the Apollo 11 moon landing).
The public often confused the smallish Susan B. Anthony dollar with the quarter, leading to the hatred directed towards the new dollar. In this respect, the United States Mint had somehow forgotten the lesson of the twenty-cent coin, which had the same problem in the nineteenth century.

Despite the unpopularity of the Susan B. Anthony coin, there was a need for metallic dollar coins in the late 1990s, and although Sacagawea dollars were scheduled for 2000, the Mint restruck the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin once more in 1999 as a temporary fix.
Despite the general unhappiness among the population with the coin, Anthony dollars have quite a few fans in the coin-collecting world.
