Following the success of Christian Gobrecht’s design on the United States Mint’s rejuvenated dollar coin program in 1836, the Mint revamped the seated Liberty design for its silver dollars of 1840 to 1873; other coin denominations at the time also used the seated Liberty design. There are several variations and different great examples of seated Liberty dollars for sale in the marketplace, and different collectors concentrate on different versions of this coin.
The seated Liberty dollar was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the trade dollar.
