In 2000 the United States began issuing Sacagawea dollar coins, sometimes known more generally as Native American dollars. The coins show an obverse side with Sacagawea, Lewis and Clark’s Native American guide on their remarkable westward expedition, and a variety of designs on the reverse. From 2000 to 2008, the reverse was an eagle and stars; since 2009 each year has seen a different design honoring a different aspect of Native American culture and history.
Sacagawea coins include copper, zinc, and manganese, in a mixture that gives them a unique golden hue; they are not, however, made of any gold. Sacagawea dollars were not as popular with the public as was hoped, and though the series continues (since 2007, in tandem with Presidential dollars), production numbers have been greatly reduced.
