President Dwight Eisenhower was honored on the Eisenhower dollar coin from 1971 until 1978. These coins, the first dollar coins official produced by the United States for circulation since 1935’s peace dollars, were the first to not be made of silver, which was reserved only for collectors’ proofs. The reverse of the Eisenhower dollars celebrated Apollo 11’s moon landing of August 1969.
Proofs and other various subcategories of Eisenhower $1 coins can be found for sale at any one time, and the sales listings generally represent a very large array of vendors and coins for all types of collectors. Buyers looking for special Eisenhower coins for their collections should monitor the sales listings closely, because new listings are added (and ended) often. The Eisenhower dollar was followed by the Susan B. Anthony dollar.
