To honor President George Washington‘s 200th birthday, the United States mint put his profile on the quarter dollar coin in 1932, where he remains to this day. The George Washington quarter at first, like previous quarters, was made of silver but in 1965 was changed to copper and nickel. Until 1998, Washington quarters showed an eagle with its wings splayed out on the reverse. (Afterwards, the design of Washington quarters would change, including the series of state quarters and the America the Beautiful quarters of 2010.) Washington quarters replaced the standing Liberty quarters of 1916-1930.
