Charles Barber designed a new series of coins beginning in 1892, and included was the Barber quarter. Like previous United States quarter-dollar coins, the Barber quarter was made of silver. Its value was rendered on the reverse as QUARTER DOLLAR.
Barber’s design was used not only on the quarter, but on other U.S. coins of the era. It replaced the decades-old seated Liberty quarter. (The standing Liberty design of 1916 replaced the Barber quarter.) There are quite a few interesting collectible and rare examples of silver Barber quarters for sale at any given time; see the marketplace listings for the current selection.
