I’ve traveled to many countries before, including Latvia and Russia, both of which have some fascinating coins in circulation. But Estonia was a new country for me. As soon as I arrived, I was surprised by the rural surroundings, the dirt roads, and the traditional wooden buildings. It was a far cry from the bustling cities I’d visited before.
In 1923, Estonia had just become an independent republic, and the country was still recovering from the aftermath of World War I. The economy was in shambles, and inflation was rampant. In fact, one Estonian mark was equivalent to one million German marks!
