There are several Bulgarian gold coins available from different eras of the country’s history. Most of the gold coins of Bulgaria for sale to collectors and investors in the marketplace today are relatively recent — special commemorative gold coins issued by the modern Republic of Bulgaria which has existed since 1990.
Earlier gold coins are sometimes offered for sale dating from the Principality of Bulgaria (1878 — 1908), which was the first time in centuries that Bulgaria could be considered apart from the Ottoman Empire. Exulting in this first taste of independence, the Bulgarians at the time celebrated their new evolving history with both gold and silver coins to go along with the regular circulation coins of the time.
