Following the Muslim conquest of the Indian subcontinent in the 1200s, there was, among others, a sultanate established in Bengal. The Sultanate of Bengal issued coins, as it remained autonomous in spite of the spread of the larger Delhi Sultanate, which encompassed much of northern India.
Coins of the Sultanate of Bengal used the currency of the Delhi Sultanate, the tanka (silver) and jital (copper). Both kinds are seen for sale on the coin market these days. The Sultanate of Bengal was eventually absorbed into the Mughal Empire.
