India included hundreds of Princely States in the 18th and 19th centuries — small and large regions of varying autonomy and influence. Dozens of these Princely States issued their own coins over the years, and this is one of the most hotly-collected areas of Indian numismatic history.
There were, generally speaking, four main Princely States, with the most influence: Hyderabad, Mysore, Baroda, and the dual Kashmir and Jammu state. But for coin collectors, there were many more — just as important, perhaps, depending on your personal collection and wants.
The Princely States’ coinage varied greatly, following the different coin traditions of the large subcontinent and reflecting the differing rulers — some Muslim, some Hindu, et cetera. There is a seemingly endless variety of Princely States coins and approaches for collecting them. Silver and gold coins were made by many of the states, as were copper coins.
