Central and Western India, then called Ariaca, was ruled by coin-producing rulers called Kshatrapas (a.k.a. Western Satraps) in the first four centuries of the common era. Their coins included silver pieces that are beloved by collectors and buyers these days.
Kshatrapa coins often feature striking designs, though some designs are simpler and show the bust of a ruler or an animal. The history of Ariaca, and of the Kshatrapas, remains somewhat elusive to modern scholars; the silver drachm coins of the era fill in many gaps in and of themselves. It is believed that there was a total of 27 different rulers during the era of the Western Satraps.
