With its own coins and a vital role in the history of modern India, the Bengal Presidency, which stretched over northern India and reached into modern-day Pakistan, Burma/Myanmar and Bangladesh. The Bengal Presidency is sometimes referred to as the Calcutta Presidency. The other two major areas of India at this time were the Bombay Presidency and the Madras Presidency.
The British ruled the regions that made up the Bengal Presidency, and many of the area’s coins were British-made and followed that country’s coinage practices. However, early Bengal Presidency coins followed the style of the waning Mughal Empire coins, and these lovely, script-heavy coins are sought by many collectors.
