King George VI of England was the Emperor of India from the beginning of his rule in 1936 until India and Pakistan gained independence in 1947; his British reign ended in 1952.
George VI’s rule was a surprise to many — his older brother Edward VIII was expected to be the new monarch following the death of their father George V, but Edward abdicated less than a year after becoming king.
