The first Tahiti banknotes were used in 1914, when Tahiti was a French colony. The notes were issued by the Bank of Indochina, and were overprinted “PAPEETE (TAHITI)” in either red or black. The three values issued in 1914 are quite rare these days.
In 1920 another series was issued, and Tahiti would continue to use Indochinese banknotes with special local overprints until the late 1950s, when Tahiti became part of the larger area of French Polynesia. From this point, banknotes for the French overseas territories were used. (There have never been any specifically Tahitian banknotes issued.)
