Except for an extremely rare 1910 issue, and some equally rare treasury notes from 1914 from the occupied German New Guinea, the first Papua New Guinea banknotes were issued in 1975 by Britain, inscribed “BANK OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA”. The currency used was 1 kina = 100 toea (although there have been no banknotes valued less than 1 kina, thus no toea notes).
Papua New Guinea banknotes tend to proudly feature subjects related to the area — the flora, fauna, and notable people of PNG. The Bird of Paradise is a common element. Modern Papua New Guinea bills are made of polymer.
