New Zealand‘s first banknotes were issued in 1934 in shillings and pounds. In 1967, New Zealand issued its first notes in dollars, having adopted a decimalized currency system.
From this point, New Zealand paper bills at first featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and were inscribed “RESERVE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND”. The inscription remains, but the design on New Zealand banknotes has become more New Zealand-specific in recent years, and the design style has become very colorful and bold.
The Chatham Islands, to the east of New Zealand’s South Island, had private commemorative banknotes issued in 2000, which are sought after by collectors and which were discontinued in 2003.
