Chatham Islands had banknotes issued in 2000-2002 by the Chatham Islands Note Corporation. With a well-designed and rather traditional design on the obverse and a colorful reverse, these notes, bearing the legend “FIRST TO SEE THE SUN” in reference to the islands’ location near the International Date Line (and east of New Zealand, of which they are a part), these interesting banknotes were discontinued in 2003 when the corporation ceased operations under pressure from the New Zealand government. (A planned series of coins was thus never issued.)
The Chatham Islands bills were intended as commemorative pieces, and were “negotiable tender” on the islands. Today, collectors can find Chatham Islands banknotes for sale (sometimes a complete set) in the marketplace. Check our listings here for the latest offers.
