French Oceania was the former name of French Polynesia. Luckily for banknote lovers now, there were several highly collectible French Oceania paper money-related items issued by France at various times. Securing examples of these for your collection is fun and, fortunately, not too difficult.
A Few French Oceania Paper Money Possibilities
The first French Oceania paper money issues were text-heavy notes ranging from 25 centimes to 2 francs in 1919. A similar but more crudely designed series followed soon after. Strictly utilitarian, these particular French Oceania banknotes won’t appeal to lovers of wondrous and colorful designs. But for collectors who like rare pieces and have an affinity for collectibles from the South Pacific, they’re beautiful in and of themselves.
Collect Australia banknotes: Colorful Australian money
In 1941, small pieces of cardboard worth 1 or 2 francs were issued for French Oceania. These were intended as emergency currency during World War II. They are vanishingly scarce nowadays, and it could be a long time before you find some good ones for your own use. Bigger and more sophisticated French Oceania banknotes were issued in 1942 and 1943, and are somewhat easier to find for sale. Vigilance is important.
How to Buy French Oceania Banknotes
When looking through French Oceania paper money for sale listings online, make sure that the pictures of any bills you’re thinking of buying are clear. Also verify that the seller offers a guarantee and/or has a good feedback rating. Also remember that selection turns over all the time, so watch carefully to see what the latest is. There are a lot of interesting French Oceania paper money collectibles out there, and waiting for the best to pop up is endlessly fun!
