FIND SWEDEN DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD BANKNOTES FOR SALE

Sweden introduced new banknotes in October 2015. The then-new 1000-kronor banknote showed a portrait of Dag Hammarskjöld on its obverse. In March 2013 however, the Riksbank announced that due to possible copyright infringement issues with the image, it would redesign Hammarskjöld’s portrait.

Dag Hammarskjöld was the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until 1961, when he died in an airplane crash in Zambia on his way to peace talks. His status as a statesman is legendary — hence Sweden’s decision to put him on their highest-denomination banknote.

His lofty status made the imbroglio regarding the new 1000-kronor banknote puzzling and rather embarrassing. How could such an issue slip between the cracks when committees were designing, discussing, and approving the banknote in the first place?

At any rate, changing a banknote is usually a difficult process — security issues and other practical matters must be carefully addressed. Better now than after issuance, at least.

Mini-text and micro-text in the 2015 Swedish banknotes

Other bills from the 2015 series also saw their proposed designs evolved, with mini-text and micro-text being chosen and refined. From the Riksbank website, here is the Swedish text that was originally being considered for each of the new notes that were to feature such text (this is both mini- and micro-text, though the final form had not been decided yet):

20-kronor — Astrid Lindgren

— “Pippi Långstrump i Söderhavet” (“Pippi in the South Seas”), 1948

— from “Fanny and Alexander”, 1982
