In 1792, the United States began an experiment with minting half dimes; these early pieces are known as flowing hair half dimes, after the depiction of Liberty on the obverse. These silver coins are pretty rare, and tend to be rather pricy compared to many other United States coins. High-grade examples are especially rare.
Despite the rarity of flowing hair half dimes, there are usually a few to be found for sale from a few vendors online.
In 1796 these early half dimes were discontinued in favor of the draped bust half dime.
