Slovakia‘s own stamp history includes the years between 1939 and 1945, and the modern years since its 1992 independence.
Beginning in the 1800s, the area now called Slovakia used the stamps of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1918, Slovakia became part of the Czechoslovak Republic, which issued its own postage stamps.
In 1939, Slovakia became independent and issued several of its own stamps until 1945; these World War II Slovakia stamps were almost all inscribed SLOVENSKO. (Be careful not to confuse this with the Southern European country of Slovenia.)
In 1945, Czechoslovakia was resurrected and Czechoslovakian stamps were again issued. This lasted until 1993, the year after Czechoslovakia peacefully separated into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. As the Slovak Republic, stamps again use the inscription SLOVENSKO. There are several postal collectibles in addition to the regularly-used postage stamps in Slovakia.
