Ascension Island is administrated by the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, but has long used its own collectible postage stamps.
In 1922, Ascension began to use the stamps of St. Helena, but with overprints for use on Ascension Island. Soon thereafter, in 1924, the first Ascension-only stamps were issued, and there have been regular issues ever since.
Ascension stamps often feature unexpected subjects, including several relating to history and science — there have been commemorative stamps in honor of, for example, certain early world maps; Tycho Brahe; and the continental divide in the Atlantic Ocean. More traditional subjects have included wildlife (fish and birds especially) and Christmas. Occasional overprint stamps have been issued, and a series of postage due stamps was created in 1986.
