The Chola Dynasty, a Hindu Tamil dynasty, ruled large parts of south India for over a thousand years, from the fourth century BC until the year 1279 AD. The Cholas issued their own coins, and were known for their beautiful art, literature, and temples, as well as advances in government and bureaucracy. One of their most noted kings was the legendary Raja Raja (“King of Kings”).
Chola coins, mostly copper with later issues in gold (quite rare), are very popular with coin collectors, and there are often quite a few available for sale in the marketplace at any given time.
At its height, the Chola Dynasty kings ruled over an area covering parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia, including southern and western India as well as parts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the Maldives, Bangladesh, and Singapore. Most Chola kings issued their own coins, which show a variety of figures and inscriptions.
